Molly

I got a comment from Molly in the previous entry. I started replying to it there, but figured it was such a smart question that it needed its own space. The essence of the thing is as follows:

“Chill out with the violence and blood. Seriously. Mortal Coil changed my life for the better: It made me very sensitive to violence and blood. It scared me to think of Val's life going down the drain like that, along with the lives of others. And so I ask: Why do you do this?”

I haven’t really discussed this on the Blog before, so this is my opportunity.

Molly, I’m always very careful not to go overboard with gore. In Playing With Fire, there's an exploding head. I could have gone into tremendous detail describing it, but I didn't- I basically said "and then his head exploded". I like to leave it up to the reader to be as graphic as they want- if they're comfortable with imagining blood and brains flying about the place, that's fine. If they're not, that's fine too. I'm not out to be extreme- that's not what these books are about.

In Mortal Coil, however, there are a few chapters devoted to an autopsy on a living person, and in this I DO go into detail. Why? Because an exploding head gets one reaction- it gets "Ooooh gross!" But that's not the reaction I wanted for the autopsy. I wanted it to be HORRIBLE. I wanted it to be cold and impersonal and just a horrible, horrible experience. In no way did I want any reader to be enjoying reading about this. The problem is, if I DIDN’T go into detail then it wouldn’t have had the same impact- there may even have been a chance that it could have been seen as just another wacky adventure this girl gets into.

Violence is a trickier subject, however. For one thing, I hesitate to call it violence. I’ve always regarded a fight scene that you read or watch onscreen as “action”, not “violence”. Violence is up-close and personal, and it’s something that happens in the real world. Anything we see in a movie or read on the page is simulated violence- which, in my opinion, is action.

But putting that to one side, let’s talk about the action in these books. When I started, there was one thing that I wanted to convey whenever I’d write a fight scene- fights HURT. Getting punched HURTS. Punching someone HURTS. Poor Valkyrie has had her leg broken, her hand broken, her tooth broken, her ribs broken... She’s had black eyes, burst lips and a bruised body. I’m typing this now and every time I use my right hand, I wince, because my knuckles are busted and bloody from hitting a bag earlier today. I spent this evening applying straight-arm bars and getting straight-arm bars applied to me- and THAT hurts, too. Even the TRAINING for violence hurts.

I have some knowledge of fights, and how it feels to be in one, and it is a thoroughly rotten feeling. Even when you win, you feel sick, because you’ve just hurt another human being. It is a terrible, horrible thing, to be in a fight. It’s not fun, and you really don’t feel okay about it afterwards. I train with doormen and bouncers who need to go somewhere to cry after they've been in a fight, simply because they've had to be MORE aggressive than the person they were fighting in order to win. They've actually sickened THEMSELVES. And that’s why my fight scenes are the way they are.

Molly, you say Mortal Coil made you sensitive to this stuff, and it scared you “to think of Val's life going down the drain like that, along with the lives of others. And so I ask: Why do you do this?”

Well, to be honest, that is exactly why I do it. I want you to be scared for Val. I want you to NOT want her to be hurt. If the fights were nothing but good fun, if nobody ever got really hurt, if Val didn’t run the risk of serious injury every time she throws a punch- then I’d have failed in what I set out to do.

I respect violence. I respect what it can do. I respect the fact that it can change your life. Two guys have an argument outside of a pizza place at night, one of them throws a punch, the other falls and hits his head, slips into unconsciousness, then a coma, wakes up with brain damage. His life- instantly changed. The life of the guy who hit him- instantly changed. Jail. Lawsuit. The sheer GUILT over what he’s done.

One moment of violence can change your life, so of course I respect it. Any intelligent person would. So I’m not going to write a book where action scenes take place without consequence. There is ALWAYS a consequence.

I hope that answers your question, Molly. Now, whether or not you agree with me is totally up to you. I don’t want to drive ANY reader away, and I don’t want to upset anyone. But the books are what they are, and I am what I am, and I write the way I write. So this is my side of the argument, and I want to sincerely thank you for asking the question.

I have to say that for me (a probably somewhat older than average reader, although I don't know if that makes a difference), the current approach to gore and violence seems to have worked exactly as intended.

The autopsy scene: I needed a few minutes break from reading after that. It was excellent, and it was horrible, and I felt a little queasy afterwards. (Not for too long, fortunately.)

And I've been impressed by the consequences of all the fighting right from the start - Val actually having her leg broken, and it hurting, in the very first book, was something I could appreciate (in an "ouch" way). I mean, there were other people who got hurt more, or died, but having it happen to her made it personal and real.

Dragona Pine said...

Now people hate me again. But I have to go soon.

It is my fault, Nicolette even said about the arguments we've had which are one of the things making her leave. But I want you to go to sleep, so I'll stop it. I'm glad you're still happy.

I trust them too, but they got angry with me for disagreeing with something. They said I called them "Not awesome" although I never said that! They were just taking what I'd said and turning it back on me! I NEVER said to Darkane "You are not awesome" but she was getting angry with me. She said I FTBA whatever that means... I can tell it's bad.

Dragona Pine said...

I want you to be happy Kallista, and I hope she comes on more than she said.

Dragona Pine said...

No, Darkane said FTBA. Just because I haven't joined that stupid club, I don't WANT to believe in what they do, and just because of that they were getting angry with me. And I'll trust you on that.

Dragona Pine said...

They ARE cool people. But I don't want to join it! Just because I don't want to join a stupid club they got angry with me and said I wasn't awesome, it's just pushed me further away from it than I was, if that's possible. It's like saying "You have to join the nerds or you aren't awesome" it's just so stupid it's unbelievable, so I'm deffinatly not joining it, and I don't care if any people call me "Not awesome". Now get some sleep, I have to go now.

*hugs Kallista*

I'll be on tonight, bye.

I really like the violence in your books, it's one of the many things that sets you apart from the anime and manga I read, where the main characters can have a bomb dropped on them and still get away with it.
Actually, your discussion has really helped me out with understanding my own story that I'm developing. I don't want to go overboard with violence and make it the norm, but I still want it to have consequences and effects. So thanks for making your side of the conersation more public, I really appreicate it. :)

Wow.
That was probably one of the most diplomatic, responsible, and sensible answers to a question I've ever actually heard.
Brilliant answer actually - have to say that I agree with your view on violence. Anything that can change your life and impact the people around you, while causing a whole lot of pain at the same time deserves your attention and to be understood propperly.
I've kind of always regarded the fight scenes in the books as just that really - I wouldn't go as far as calling them violent - they are simply, as you say, action scenes. Their not like those films where you see some tough guy beating some other guy senseless - because that really is classified as violence. Although the fight sceens in the books are realistic - they arent too much. Well not in my opinion anyway. Got just the perfect balance there!
The Dr Nye chapter? Yeah it was kinda creepy - but in a REALLY good way! It was written with just the right ammount of gross gore.
I kind of got the impression with the fight scenes that you were trying to show that Val isn't unstoppable and it's still easy for her to get hurt - she's still a teenage girl after all. But I think she is tough and handles it well. Isn't that what her training is about? So she can defend herself?
Not good to hear you hurt your hand - I hope it gets better soon - nothing too serious I hope?
Oh and one last thing? You can't drive me away. A bulldozer couldn't drive me away. Love the books FAR too much!!
:)x

From what I understood of the argument they weren't trying to force you to be a nerdfighter.

Rather they were upset that you insulted them and let it get out of hand.

I don't think that it's anyone's fault. Life is never that simple. There are always multiple factors and reasons that cause things.

Sorry for bringing this up again.

Dragona Pine said...

But I never insulted them! Yes I insulted the group that they've joined, but I never insulted them personally. Darkane ignored me completely and Niall was saying things about me behind my back, I wouldn't mind but they're like Jehovas Witnesses trying to convert the whole blog (no offense to nerdfighters of course) and as soon as one person disagrees with it, they call them "Not awesome" and practically bite your head off.

Aquila Felis said...

Dragona Pine said...

Aquila, there is something wrong with it, but it isn't the worst insult ever lol. But the fact they have the nerve to say it just because people don't agree with a club they're in, it's like saying "Join the club or you're not awesome" at least I don't contradict myself.

Octa said...

I know you didn't insult them personally I agree but nerdfighters is something close to their (and my) heart. So I expect that by insulting an ideal they cherish deeply they over reacted and caused the argument. I know they then insulted you but I still don't see how they asked you to join.

The way I see it is that no one should be forced to be someone they're not but equally accept their ideals even if you don't believe them.

And that is probably all I can think of about it.

*badger gets angry and tries to eat Octa*

Dragona Pine said...

You haven't restarted it Octa. I wasn't angry at them because they insulted me, I was angry at them because they insulted me BECAUSE I hadn't joined a stupid club and disagreed with it, if that's what they do to people who aren't in the club I'm deffinatly not joining, and I'm deffinatly not joining anyway but... ah well...

Hey everyone.
And to my Goldon God: I'm not sure how important you think my sole opinion is, but I am sure many other minions also feel the same way ; YOU ARE NOT MAKING US FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE OR PUSHING US AWAY.
Yes, this Molly person poses a valid point, but I must say I have read much more gruesome and bloodthirsty books. Take Stephen King and Karin Slaughter for example...
To be honest, there are other books that have more violence and gore in them that are also aimed at kids of our age. I believe that our Golden Gods current approach to action and gore is perfect for the target he is trying to impress.
I don't feel as though a story can seem real unless you add something that people can relate to - action scenes and mild gore. We can relate to this, and thats why we like it.
People may think what they wish of me, but I do enjoy the fight scenes but I don't want Valkyrie to get hurt. I get a sort of adrenaline rush from the big fight scenes and they are exciting and fast paced. Our Golden God does not write the fight scene with the full inention of causing as much harm as physically possible to his characters... he writes the fight scene so he can highlight the consequences of being involved in a life like this. Yes, Molly's opinion is valid but Golden God ; there is no problem with what you are writing. {Not like you need me to tell you that anyway : ) }
I hope our Golden God does read this comment, because it may just be the only sensible thing I have ever read in my entire existence x

No offence Derek, but I kind of agree with Molly about Mortal Coil, especially when Valkyrie is with Dr Nye. I could picture it really vividly (which is a really good thing, I must admit. It was described in amazing detail) it didn't however make me more sensitive about violence. It actually made me feel sick watching it. I've read Mortal Coil about 7 times, and after the first time I can't read the scene's with Dr Nye anymore because they're so gory. Definitly your goriest yet! (that was a complement :)

Jaguar, me and Kallista are married, we just chose to keep our names, that's all.

Anonymous said...

hi dragona.
there. said it.
leave it ALONE, Aquila!
*goes over and pokes Aquila until Aquila takes shoes off*
Stop trying to find loopholes that don't even count, okay?

Anonymous said...

Okay! Sorted! I'm not confused anymore :)

Aquila Felis said...

Oh... but I love finding loopholes...
*looks down sheepishly*

Anonymous said...

yes, well it doesn't suit you.

Anonymous said...

*looks around grumpily*
I'm bored. there's nothing to do...

Nicole Fudge (Nicolette Croga) said...

I saw Kallista! Sorry mum dragged me off i'm writting this on my ipod!... gtg!

Aquila Felis said...

Wow... first I'm told which colour suits me and now what behaviour suits me...
How comes you people think you know more about me than I do?^^

Ah whatever. I love my kangaroos, no need to wear jaguars.^^

Anonymous said...

I'm always bored. There's always nothing to do...

Octa said...

I'm around.

Anonymous said...

Now please, take those shoes back to where they came from and wait for me to come along and buy them.

Aquila Felis said...

Hey Jaguar, if you're bored... we could start an argument, you know? Or a fight...
*throws cake at Jaguar*

Dragona Pine said...

Don't Aquila.

Aquila Felis said...

Not these kind of arguments... I just don't have another word for it.

Anonymous said...

*spins around in super speeed and cake all flies into the toilet. Waves hand in front of sensor and toilet flushes*
I was thinking more along the lines of something DIFFERENT, Aquila. Not a FOOD fight...

Dragona Pine said...

Food fights, fair enough. As long as it STAYS in a food fight, doesn't get out of control and no one gets killed.

Aquila Felis said...

*glues Jaguars feet on the ceiling*
Different enough?

Anonymous said...

but a POKE FIGHT!
*is super speedy once more and pokes Aquila lots*
I'm winning! React soon, Aquila!

If a book doesn't change your life one way or another then an author never really does there job. If you are reading a fiction book, that book she be able to help you feel all the different emotions.. Same thing with a good movie. You should be able to feel scared for the person want to cry with them love them and hate them.. With Mr. Landy's books I always have different emotions running through me and that is what captured me and made me read them all. Thanks for writing these books.

Aquila Felis said...

I reacted even before you did.^^

Anonymous said...

*cuts through glue with claws and lands on feet*
meh. simple.

Dragona Pine said...

Just make sure it stays in a poke fight. No super speed, just poking eachother. Don't let it get out of hand or turn into a huge argument.

Aquila Felis said...

*finds some hunters*
Look a Jaguar!
*hunters start hunting here*

So, how do you want to poke me now.^^

Aquila Felis said...

Dragona, I was talking about something like our argument/discussion/whatever about cars.

Octa said...

battle of wills?

Is the term your're looking for. I think.

Dragona Pine said...

Battle of wills are generally boring and probably will erupt into an argument.

Aquila Felis said...

I'm talking about the kind of argument you have with friends or sipplings... nothing serious, but a lot of fun.

Anonymous said...

but I possess super speed, so it's impossible for me not to use it.
*runs around the whole of England in a minute*
see?
*pants a tiny bit*
STOP HUNTING THE JAGUARS! THEY'RE ENDANGERED, YOU PRUNE!

Octa said...

But they test each others wit and ability to react to things in an unexpected way.

They're really fun!

Aquila Felis said...

sipplings? I meant siblings.

Dragona Pine said...

Alright, find things that you have different opinions on, but nothing serious and nothing that will cause arguments, like cars, food something like that.

Anonymous said...

sipplings.
never heard of it.

Aquila Felis said...

Oh, they don't want to kill them...
there's a really nice zoo waiting for them... ^^

Dragona Pine said...

Kallista, do you want to go have a conversation? You said you had more to tell me.

Anonymous said...

as long as it's got the right environment...
so why did you call them hunters then?
ha. i think.

Aquila Felis said...

Cause they hunt. Hunting doesn't neccessarily include killing, right?

Anonymous said...

EVERYBODY STARE AT DRAGONA!
*everyone stares at Dragona*

Dragona Pine said...

Nice reply Aquila :)

Aquila Felis said...

*eats one of the Cs*
You didn't see anything.

Aquila Felis said...

*stares at Dragona, too*
^^

Anonymous said...

is everyone staring?

*continues to stare*

Anonymous said...

lol, stares.
*nudges everyone else with elbow*
STARE!
*Dragona looks mildly annoyed*

Aquila Felis said...

*stares at Dragona, waiting for something to happen*

Why are we doing this again?

Anonymous said...

kallista!

Dragona Pine said...
